Search Engine Primer

Many people use them every day, but few understand the nature and purpose of a search engine.

A search engine is not a thing.  It is nothing more than amathematical algorithm, programmed to perform a certain function.  According to Wikipedia, 'an algorithm is a finite list of well-defined instructions for accomplishing some task...'

In the case of a search engine, the 'task' is finding and promoting the most unique, relveant content on the Internet.  And, this is no same task.  With millions of pages of content being added every month, the search engines have to comb through every page, to find and separate the gems from the junk.

Although, the goal of search engines is clear, many webmasters try to 'cheat' the system by providing junk pages and duplicate content.  Such pages are usually removed (de-indexed) from the search engines, so as to make room for higher quality sites.

Search engine traffic, as known as 'Organic', is the crown jewel of SEM.  This free traffic is what professional websmasters strive to acheive.  When a site is properly optimized and maintained, the search engines will reward this site with 'Organic' traffic, and a high placement in the search engine result pages (SERP)

At Rainmaker SEM, we structure our clients sites to be "search Engine friendly', as thus receive 'organic' traffic.
